The Dosage Question: How much CBD do I give my horse?

Once people learn about the many benefits Cannabidiol (CBD) can have for their animal’s health, the next logical question is, “how much CBD do I give my horse?”

Most people ask this question with a few assumptions in mind:

  1. Dosage will be adjusted lower or higher based on the horse’s weight and age.
  2. Dosage will be adjusted lower or higher based on the type and severity of the medical condition.

Unfortunately, even though these are logical assumptions, to date there has not been enough research to validate standardized dosing protocols based on specific conditions and extenuating variables such as weight, age, breed, etc.

It is important to note: CBD products are not approved by the FDA for the diagnosis, cure , mitigation, treatment or prevention of any disease. When seeking to add any new supplement to your animal’s diet you should seek the advice of a qualified veterinarian.

To determine the effective dosage of CBD for your horse, we recommend using a Stepwise Dosing Procedure.

Because of the unique nature of cannabis, and cannabinoid based remedies, many medical professionals agree that the smartest approach to find an effective dosage of CBD is to use a Stepwise Dosing Procedure.

What is Stepwise Dosing? Stepwise dosing is a process whereby, you start with a small baseline dose and then increase the dosage slowly and incrementally over a specific time frame to determine the point at which the dosage becomes effective in treating the specific condition or symptom.

How to convert ML of oil to MG of CBD

The amount of CBD (potency) varies according to the product:

  • 3600mg contains 30mg of CBD per ml of oil.
  • 7200mg contains 60mg of CBD per ml of oil.
  • 14400mg contains 120mg of CBD per ml of oil.

How to dose CBD using Stepwise Dosing:

Step 1: Determine your initial baseline daily dosage. (Suggested starting dose of 40mg CBD daily

Step 2: Establish the incremental (step) dosage you will use to slowly raise the daily dosage level for each step. (Suggested increase of 20mg

Step 3: Start administering the CBD at the daily baseline dosage for a full 7 days (40mg daily). Pay attention to any changes in your horse’s symptoms or condition and document. The 7 days gives the CBD time to build an accumulative effect.

Step 4:  After 7 days at your baseline dosage, if you are not receiving the desired results, then increase the dosage by one step (20mg) to create a new baseline dosage.

Step 5: For the next 3 days (Day 8 – 10), administer the new increased dosage (40mg + 20mg). Pay attention to any changes in your horse’s symptoms or condition and document.

Step 6: Repeat. After 3 days of administering at the new dosage level, if you still have not obtained the desired results then continue to raise the dosage by 20mg every 3 days until you find the minimum effective dose that relieves symptoms. This may take several steps, be patient and stick to the process. For example, if your animal’s minimum effective dose turned out to be  120mg it would take 19 days using the stepwise dosing procedure to dial-in the most effective dosage.

Step 7: Refine the dosage. Once you find the dose that works for your animal, you can refine the dosage by reversing the process and lowering the dosage by small 5mg steps in 3 day increments to dial in a more exact dosage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Will CBD make my horse high?
No, Green Flower Botanical’s Equine CBD Formulations contain 0.0% THC and will not cause any type of intoxication or high.

  2. Is a prescription required from my veterinarian to purchase Green Flower’s Equine CBD Formulations?
No, all of Green Flower Botanical’s products, including our Equine Formulations, can be purchased without prescription and shipped to all 50 states.

  3. Will CBD work for all horses?
Yes and No. All animals, including humans and horses, can benefit from supplementation of phytocannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD).  All mammals have an endocannabinoid system responsible for regulating and creating homeostasis among the various biological systems including, the immune system, skeletal system, neurological pathways, endocrine system, etc. There are many health benefits associated with the use of cannabidiol to maintain and stimulate a responsive endocannabinoid system. The anecdotal and pre-clinical evidence for cannabidiol as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-anxiety, and anticonvulsant is well established. However, as there are many variables to any particular disease state or specific condition, it is possible, that while one horse may respond almost miraculously to cannabinoid use, another may not experience much, if any, benefit at all. Before choosing to purchase any CBD product, you should gather as much information as you can as to its effects and uses. After reviewing the research, the last step will be to obtain a premium-grade, full-spectrum Equine CBD oil and see how your animal responds to these cannabinoids specifically.

  4. Your products come in various potencies. Which one do I need?
Equestrian Formulations come in 1800mg, 3600mg and 7200mg sizes. The milligrams listed on the label is the total CBD in the bottle. One size is not more powerful than another in effect, it simply contains more total CBD by volume. So, if your horse requires a daily dosage of 40mg, the 1800mg product would provide 45 days of dosage, the 3600mg product would provide 90 days of dosage and the 7200mg product would provide 180 days of dosage. The larger sizes provide the most cost effective way to purchase CBD for those with multiple horses or who just want to save buying in bulk. If you are new to CBD and have not yet established your horse’s minimum effective dose, we recommend purchasing the 1800mg product and following the Stepwise Dosing Procedure.

  5. Is CBD safe at high dosages? What are the side effects?
There are multiple studies demonstrating the effectiveness of CBD in treating various conditions. Most of these studies conclude that CBD (cannabidiol) is safe and virtually free of side effects. A review on the Safety and side effects of cannabidiol by the NCBI for example suggests that controlled CBD (cannabidiol) administration is safe and non-toxic in humans and animals. Also, according to this review paper, “high doses up to 1,500 mg/day of CBD are reportedly well tolerated in humans.”
